How to play Letroso

Find one secret word of up to 10 letters. Each guess is scored for order, adjacency, and whether it touches the true start or end.

Letroso does not lock you to six tries or to a row of five boxes. You type a word, move the cursor if you need to edit the middle, and press Enter. The board keeps every guess.

Gray means the letter is not in the secret word. Amber means the letter is in the word, but not in the order your guess used. Green means the letter belongs to an in-order match. When green tiles share a bridge, those letters are neighbors. A pill with a rounded left end starts the word. A rounded right end finishes it.

The samples below all refer to the secret word EXAMPLE. They are the shortest way to see the four patterns you will meet on a real board.

M, P, and L sit together in the secret word, so their tiles join into one block.

Rounded ends mean the word starts with EX and ends with E.

A reliable opening

Start with a word that spends several common consonants and at least two vowels. After that guess, delete every gray letter from your next try. Keep amber letters, but move them. If two green letters are joined, do not split them with a new letter.

If the left side of a green run is rounded, stop testing letters in front of it. If the right side is rounded, stop testing letters after it. A gap between two green heads means at least one letter belongs between them, even when you do not know which letter yet.

Length is part of the clue

The secret word is 4 to 8 letters on this site, and a guess may still be up to 10. A short guess can prove a prefix. A longer guess can test whether an amber letter belongs before or after a green run. When your guess matches the secret word letter for letter, the whole row becomes one rounded pill.

Can the guess be a different length from the secret word?

Yes. A guess can be 2 to 10 letters even when the secret word is shorter or longer. The tiles describe the guess you typed, not a fixed row of empty boxes.

What does a single green tile mean?

One confirmed letter, with every other tile gray, is painted green even if it is out of a longer run. It means that letter is in the word and you have not confirmed anything else yet.

Which words are accepted?

Guesses have to be in the English word list used by this board, or be the secret word itself. A string of random letters is rejected.
